On
the north-western coast of Sicily, in the bay between the two
nature reserves: Zingaro (west) and Mount Cofano (east), there
lies San Vito Lo Capo. One of the many prides of the province
of Trapani, San Vito Lo Capo is animated by the thousands of
aspects and the thousands of suggestions you can breathe among
the typical small white houses.

Houses
which stand in a row, are sheltered from the sun and the wind and
are surrounded by bouganvillea, hibiscus and jasmine flowers, and
orange and lemon trees. The mind soon wanders to the other side of
the Mediterranean sea, to the northern part of Africa which seems to
have moved here to Sicily. But if you look at the sea, then, the idea
is a tropical scenery: two kilometres of white, fine sand are there
for those who love a sea of an emerald green with its many
reflections in the sun.The origins of San Vito are uncertain. The
first proofs of its existence date back to 1400, when the
sanctuary-fortress was built to give shelter to the pilgrims and
save them from the attacks of the turkish/barbarian bandits. The
chapel of Santa Crescenza, in a pure arabic style, is very beautiful
and also built to protect the coast from the attacks of the bandits.
From the architectural and historical point of views the watch
towers Impiso, Torrazzo, Sceri, Roccazzo and Isolidda are
particularly interesting and were built in 1584 to protect the whole
coast. The San Vito territory is a box full of treasures and offers
the visitor the opportunity to walk around medieval towns or
splendid oasis rich in vegetation such as the nature reserves
Zingaro and Cofano. The Zingaro reserve lies in an absolutely remote
and uncontaminated part of the world, rich in flowers, plants and
trees where you can enjoy a wonderful sea of a crystalline green and
a series of silent bays sheltered by steep cliffs where almost
extint rapacious birds have their nests. On the horizon, westward,
you can appreciate the skyline of the Egadi islands (Favignana,
Levanzo and Marettimo), famous for the uncontaminated beauty of
their waters. Eastward, on the other hand, you can see Mount Erice
and its medieval town, dating back to the ancient people of Elimi,
with more than sixty churches..

|
The
tourist only needs a few kilometres drive to visit
historically, artistically and culturally interesting places,
among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Segesta, with
its theatre and its doric temple; Agrigento; Erice, a
medieval town surrounded by phoenician-punic walls;
|
Trapani,
with its salt pans, the wonderful Castello di Mare and the Egadi
islands facing the harbour; Selinunte, with its archaeological
area;
.
|
Marsala
and Mothya, the Phoenician island, with its reflection in
the Stagnone and finally Palermo, rich in artistic,
historical and cultural beauties. Last but not least, we
cannot but deal with San Vito food and its main
representative: fish cous cous. |

|
 |
For
centuries, in fact, the best cous cous has been cooked in
this splendid paradise, dressed with the tastiest fresh fish
fished in the waters off cape San Vito. In fact every year,
at the end of September, the international competition
"Cous Cous Fest" takes place in San Vito.
|
And
... not to mention the delicious cakes, icecream, cheese and the
typical local dishes. You don't get to San Vito by chance and you
don't feel indifferent when you leave. If you love the sea and the
carribean type of white sand, it is ideal for those families who
love spending their holidays in uncontaminated places and trying
all the tastes of somewhere yet to be discovered.
